Senior Week

There is a sort of hierarchy when it comes to recognition and awards on deviantART. Some deviants like to feature other artists by showcasing their work in journal features. Truly fantastic deviations are featured as the highly-sought-after Daily Deviation (FAQ #61: What is a Daily Deviation?). However, there is one accolade that stands out above all others.

Deviousness

This award is presented at the beginning of each month by fourteenthstar to one very-deserving deviant. As stated in the Deviousness announcement, the award is presented "in recognition of exemplary membership and an outstanding spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community."

Once Deviousness has been awarded, the recipient receives a widget on their profile:

The community members selected to receive Deviousness generally produce inspiring artwork, are approachable and willing to lend a helping hand, and host community contests and events. Many have donated their time and effort as Community Volunteers or provided valuable resources and tutorials. They are truly a shining example of what it means to be part of this website!

I had the chance to talk to a couple Deviousness recipients. I asked them what their reaction was to receiving this award:

"It was kind of funny because usually I stay up on the 1st of each month to see who gets deviousness but that night I was extremely tired and decided I'd just wait until morning to see who got it. When I woke up I had a message center full of congrats and it was pretty cool. dA was a little glitchy with sending journals at that time so I didn't see the journal that Fiona wrote until about 2 days later. Overall it was really exciting though and I felt honored to have been put in the spotlight like that."
- AstralseedDeviousness for July 2014

"I didn't know what this award is and so I didn't realize what it meant either. I came to realizev however when I saw a flood of visitors on my deviantart site in Septembre... about 70.000 visitors more than usually visited my site. A lot of new people showed up and wrote me notes and comments ...that was quite astonishing for me I have to admit. And I am really thankful. Yet now, everything turned back to normality again."
- scheinbar, Deviousness for September 2014

"When I [saw] that I was given that Deviousness Award it felt very weird first (ok, it still does). What got me the most is not the attention and all, but the lovely and extremely kind words of so many people - especially those on the announcement. It really made me cry, as it is very touching to see/read that."
- GinkgoWerkstatt, Deviousness for October 2014

"...each day i struggle to draw, been on deviant over 10 years, sometimes you doubt if you are going the right way, I like when people leaves you feedback to encourage you [to] continue drawing or painting, feels like fresh air, like if you are in a race competition, and in the middle of the race you get more energy to boots speed, instead of almost falling to the ground. This award felt good because of the comments of close friends ... I still think [I'm] in the middle of the road, there is so much stuff to learn, so having this extra pushes feels incredible."
- elsevilla, Deviousness for November 2014
